He refined his sensitivity as stylist in the subsequent years, gaining a great deal of invaluable experience from working in close contact with panel beaters and assemblers belonging to a fantastic stock of extremely talented artisans.
He lavished the knowledge gained, day after day, on a long series of gratifying projects, of great satisfaction to an artist like him. The exhibition also includes the various bodywork designers for whom Tom worked with different positions and roles. Benefiting from the initial skills gained in Ghia, he joined Pininfarina, the famous international sanctuary of coachbuilders, in There, he played a part in the creation of many unique examples on the most diverse mechanics, from Fiat to Chevrolet, from Lancia to Ferrari; his most successful creation was the Fiat Sport Spider, with over two hundred thousand models produced in 20 years.
On his return to Ghia inas head of the style department, Tjaarda focused on the research he had started as a university student and outlined in his thesis. His intention was to make the structure part of the bodywork so that perfectly smooth external surfaces could be obtained.
Tjaarda then designed a range of De Tomaso models with different technical and construction features some of which were marketed by Ford in the United States, with the Pantera that was also competitively successful.
Today, his stylistic consultancy work still continues on behalf of many international manufacturers and sets the seal on a wonderful career featuring detailed formal research and marked creative sensitivity. Milanese, he graduated from the Bocconi University and was a firm supporter of the European Union even before Europe showed signs of setting it up — his degree thesis discussed the relationships and development of the car industry in the European Market.
His almost maniacal passion for the international history of the car and knowledge of the main players made him one of the leading experts of the sector for many years. Not registered? Please accept marketing cookies to view this content.

Today Isotta-Fraschini is a set of several companies. Isotta Fraschini was the most extreme and ultra-luxury marque in Italy; it was a true Italian pedigree, regarded as highly as Rolls-Royce is to the British but even more unusual. Like its Anglo counterpart, the name was made up of two surnames of its founders, Cesare Isotta and Oreste Fraschini.
This high-end luxury car marque was established as Fabbrica Automobili Isotta-Fraschini.
Prior to establishing their own company inIsotta and Fraschini were assembling Renault autombiles beginning in The first automobile which this marque produced featured a four cylinder that had an output of 12 hp 9 kW which was succeeded by 16 hp 12 kW then 24 hp 18 kW.
In Isotta-Fraschini gained much notoriety in the race, Coppa Florio which they entered their Tipo D that featured a 17 liter hp 75 engine. Cesare Isotta and the Fraschini brothers Vincenzo FraschiniAntonio Fraschini and Oreste Fraschiniwere introduced to the world of automobile manufacturing when they decided to start importing French cars to be assembled in Italy.
Cesare Isotta, a lawyer by profession, was instrumental in getting the company off the ground. The Fraschini brothers naturally gravitated towards their respective aptitudes within their newly formed company. A preferred meeting place of the founders of Isotta-Fraschini was at the home of a very well-heeled family in their hometown of Milan.
This home, belonging to Bianchi Anderlonisseems like an odd location for young, enterprising men to gather and discuss business, until one is told of the three Anderlonis sisters who resided there. Speculation about the motives for this chosen place to discuss business were put to rest when Cesare Isotta wed Maria Anderlonis, Vincenzo Fraschini married Teodolinda and Antonio Fraschini tied the knot with the third sister, Carla. As for Oreste Fraschini, he would remain a bachelor for the rest of his life.
This would prove to be one of the greatest decisions ever made by the company, as Cattaneothrough his endeavors with Isotta-Fraschini, would become one of the greatest Italian engineers of all time. Cattaneo wasted no time introducing his ideas, and had the rest of the company feverishly trying to keep up.
Using alphabetic designation, the ambitious engineer quickly ran through, and eventually out, of letters. This was good because the public was very receptive to these early Isotta-Fraschini automobiles. Winning a race in the budding years of the automobile industry not only earned a company excellent promotion, but it proved to be the ultimate display of reliability, something that was not automatically assumed by customers when buying a new vehicle.
However, the first Isotta-Fraschini race car designed by Giustino Cattaneo may be the most famous, and certainly not for its racing success. The Isotta-Fraschini Tipo-D race car was powered by a 17, cubic centimeter, 1, cubic inch four-cylinder engine. In the s the Italian company Isotta Fraschini IFwhich specialized in the production of luxury cars, airplane, and naval engines had acquired through German company MAN SE the production license of Diesel engines. In they got in the truck market with the D80 heavy truck.
Army Diesel fuelimmediately adopted by the Italian Royal Army. In the Isotta Fraschini D65 was added. These two trucks are known as the 1st series. Following the unification decree ofwhich required manufacturer to standardize certain properties weight, capacity, number of axlespeed in relation to any requisition for the war effort, in the Milanese house changed the rules thus allowing unified production of Isotta Fraschini D80 CO civilian version and D80 COM military version both known as the 2nd series.
After World War IIthe 3rd series went into production for the civilian market. The cab, built by Zagatois conventional, right-hand drive. On the nose, 5 chrome lines start from the badge in the center of the grille and move back along the sides of the bonnet. The engine is an I6 four-stroke Diesel with displacement of 7, cc and delivers 95 hp rpm. The frame, supporting a 6. The D80 CO and COM of the "2nd series", "unified" in accordance with the provisions of the Government, are characterized by a low fuel consumption and the presence of booster air.
Outwardly, the CO and COM civilian and military have the same cabin with rounded corners, but they differ in the nose: the civilian model has an oval-shaped grille, while in the military is rectangular in addition, while the civilian model is equipped with electric starter, the military was produced with a manual crank starter, and only into the war did the military version get equipped with electric start with battery.
